Uri Gellar

Born in Israel on December 20, 1946, Uri Gellar has become one of the world’s most controversial and yet celebrated self proclaimed mystifiers to date. His parents were of Hungarian and Australian descent. His mother was a seamstress, who worked long days to help pay bills. His father served in the Israeli army and was considered a hard working and honourable man. Uri learned the value of hard work, service and community pride from his parents. He considers this the main reason for his success.

Discovering and Honing His Talent

By the time he was five years old, Uri began showing his unusual abilities. He caused his spoon to curl and break in his hand, without putting any pressure on it. He honed this ability at school, performing it repeatedly to his peers. His teachers and the other students found this ability interesting. However, as time went on, Uri found that people started making fun of him. He also found that some people considered him an outcast because of his unusual ability.

Military Career

During Uri’s life, he has held many jobs. He served as a paratrooper in the Israeli army during the six-day war of 1967. It is unknown if he used his telepathic abilities during this time. Many speculate that he did not because of the strictness of the Israeli army.

The Telepathic Model

For a short time, he modelled, when many ad campaigns photographed him. Although he is not considered a stunningly attractive man, his deep-set eyes and chiselled features made him an ideal model. This worked really well when a company wanted all the attention focused on the product at hand instead of the model.

Public Performances

He began performing his telepathy and psycho kinesis, and by 1971, he was a household name in Israel. When asked to speak on a national radio programme with, Golda Meir, Uri experienced an instant boost in popularity. Meir spoke of Uri frequently after that. Each time, he experienced the same influx of fans.

Government Aid

He has since worked with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the United States Central Intelligence Agency. He is called upon occasionally when the agencies believe he can help a case or project with his abilities.

He has worked with nuclear arms disarmament negotiations, and many other peacekeeping committees. He spoke at conferences to many chief executive officers and directors at many large corporations throughout the world.

Uri has also used some of his unusual talents to find a huge offshore oil field for Mexico. Mexico’s president at that time, Jose Lopez Portillo, granted Uri Mexican nationality for this feat.

Public Service Work

All of this fame and fortune has allowed Uri the ability to help others in many ways, founding the Uri Gellar Charitable Foundation. He donates a considerable portion of money he earns from commercials and the sale of his books to these charities. This foundation helps sick and underprivileged children. He also donates money to help certain animal charities. More information about Uri can be found on his website http://www.uri-geller.com/index.htm.
