From Hell, The Hughes Brothers, 2001
Based on the book by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, From Hell is the Hughes Brothers directorial version of the story. The movie stars Johnnie Depp as Abberline who is intent on solving the mystery of Jack the Ripper. Throughout the movie viewers are intrigued as Abberline slowly closes in on the murderer and discounts theories that the murderer is Jewish or a butcher. The movie really gets intense when Abberline focuses in on the Masons and the royal family.
While the movie is loosely based on real life events and we all know that the real Jack the Ripper was not found, the Hughes Brothers do make a convincing tale whether it’s true or not. The brothers also kept pretty close to the book with only a few changes. The murders are gruesome so you must have a strong stomach or know when to look away. However, the scariest thing about the movie is how the Hughes Brothers communicate that no matter how much Abberline tries to stop the murders, he simply can’t because of the high level of power that is tied to them.
Those who enjoy Johnny Depp will find that this movie stays true to his genre of movies which tend to be dark and slightly twisted. He puts on a good performance and the viewers will grow to like Abberline. Finally, while the movie is intense and suspenseful, it does have its slow moments. At times, it can drag on and become borderline boring. Nonetheless, the movie overall has merit and is decent. Find out about ssd drives here. |
